The Short Message Service (SMS) is the ability to send and receive text messages to and from mobile telephones either from another hand held mobile device or from the comfort of you desk top computer.

The text can comprise of words or numbers or an alphanumeric combination.

The first short message is believed to have been sent in December 1992 from a Personal Computer (PC) to a mobile phone through a GSM network in the UK. The message was believed to be English. Each short message is up to 160 characters in length when Latin alphabets are used and 69 characters in length when a non-Latin alphabet such as Arabic is used.
